Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Maritime Girondin — Section de Pessac
Open to all

A welcoming association with no prerequisites other than genuine interest

The work of preserving the maritime heritage of the Gironde cannot be done by a handful of enthusiasts alone — it requires the sustained engagement of the wider community. Whether you have practical skills to offer, a family connection to the estuary's working past, a desire to support heritage education, or simply a willingness to show up on a Saturday morning and help, there is a meaningful place for you in the Section de Pessac.

We are a welcoming association with no prerequisites for membership other than genuine interest, and we have never yet failed to find the right role for someone who wanted to contribute. Experienced boatbuilders are always needed — but so are people who can drive an elderly interviewee to a recording session, help set up chairs for a winter lecture, or photograph a restoration in progress for our archive. The river does not ask for credentials; neither do we.

Our members come from every walk of life: there are retired engineers and active teachers, teenagers who came on a school visit and stayed, and grandparents who remember their own families working the estuary. What unites them is the conviction that this heritage matters and that their own effort, however modest, contributes to keeping it alive.

The river does not ask for credentials; neither do we. There is always a role — however large or small — for someone who genuinely wants to help.

Three ways to contribute

Volunteer, donate, or partner

Every form of engagement is valuable and every contribution, however it arrives, goes directly toward the work of preserving a heritage that belongs to all of us.
